For Professionals

Sexual medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with human sexuality and its disorders.  This includes:

  • sexual function

  • sexual and/or partnership experience and behavior

  • gender identity

  • sexual trauma and its consequences

Sexual medicine addresses both the individual and couple and it has its foundations in looking at people and experiences from a bio-psycho-social-spiritual perspective. Sexual medicine specialists have a deeper than average knowledge of the effects that many medical conditions and/or their treatment have on sexual function.

Typical Sexual Medicine Issues:

  • Problems with sexual desire

  • Problems with arousal including problems with erections, lubrication, or problems like persistent genital arousal disorder

  • Problems with orgasm -- not having orgasms, having them too early or too delayed

  • Pelvic pain which effects sexual function and satisfaction

  • Sexual issues arising from cancer or cancer treatment

  • Sexual wellness for people with physical disabilities as well as intellectual and developmental disabilities

  • Transperson sexual wellness

Sexual Medicine is an integral part of every branch of medicine-- as sexual function touches on all aspects of a person's wellbeing. Nevertheless, medical professionals may not have the knowledge, interest, experience, time, or comfort with these issues to address them fully. This is where sexual medicine consultation can be helpful.
